Coming off the back of OK Computer, Radiohead neatly sidestepped their seemingly inevitable promotion to the arena rock aristocracy alongside the likes of U2 by wrong-footing their audience and the critics with a taught, frosty collection of warped techno, ambient dreaminess and free jazz skronk. That said, Kid A’s actually a much friendlier listen than its formidable reputation would suggest. Amid the distorted beats, horns and bubbling synths are some of the band’s most beautiful melodies, unforgettable songs and even the odd chorus or two, which you can hum and everything. Having garnered middling reviews at the time of its release – the NME harrumphed that “They’ve rather sold short the essence of their art” – Kid A has come to be seen as perhaps the band’s most important record, and a bona-fide modern classic. Here’s your chance to find out why. The album playback will be followed by a Q&A session. After a short break, we'll follow the album with our usual ‘Dead Wax’ session. Bring along a vinyl disc of your choice and hear a track from it played through the Arts Centre PA. This can be anything you like, for any reason – the more ‘out there’ the better.
Tickets are likely to be popular, so early booking is recommended. Secure your place and enjoy a brilliant live event at Colchester Arts Centre.
